  3. Gauges • Refrigeration Gauges: • Read the operating pressures of the system in pounds per square inch (psi). • The gauge set consists of a compound gauge and a high pressure gauge. • The compound gauge will read a vacuum as well as a pressure.

  4. Gauges • All the valves open a path from each outside hose to the hose port in the center. • The gauges read the pressures from the hoses under each gauge, without opening the valves.

  5. Gauges • Low pressure gauges read the pressures through the whole low side of the system, from the metering device to the compressor. • High pressure gauges read the pressures on the high side of the system, from the compressor to the metering device.

  6. Gauges • Low pressure gauges read the temperature of saturation in the evaporator. This is the point where the liquid has changed to gas. • High pressure gauges read the temperature of saturation in the condenser. This is the point where the high pressure HOT vapor turns back to high pressure liquid.

  7. Pressures • Atmospheric Pressure • The pressure of the atmosphere’s weight on the earth. • It is 14.7 psi at sea level • Gauge Pressure • The pressure on a substance, not including the atmospheric pressure.

  8. Pressures • Absolute Pressure • The total pressure on a substance or object, including gauge and atmospheric. • Vacuum reduction (vacuum) is measured in: • Inches of mercury • Microns • Water Column

  9. Pumping Down Gauges • To remove the manifold gauges and put as much refrigerant back into the system as possible, you must pump down the gauges: • When using low loss fittings – remove the high side hose from the Schrader fittings. • When not using low loss fittings – back seat the liquid line service valve (leave high side hose in place). • If low pressure switch is used, you may have to jump out the switch.

  10. Pumping Down Gauges • Pump down gauges, cont’d: • Front seat the suction service valve (turn all the way in). • Open the high side (red) manifold valve and allow refrigerant into the manifold. • Open the low side (blue) manifold port and allow the refrigerant to enter the system. • When both gauges read near 0 psig shut the system down.

  11. Pumping Down Gauges • Pump down gauges, cont’d: • Remove jumper if used • Backseat low side service valve. • Remove hose from low side and high side. • Reinstall all caps and restart system. • Make sure system starts properly and check caps and valves for leaks.
