  1. I amthe resurrection John 11:23-27

  2. Background theology • The gospel of John differs dramatically from the Synoptics • John’s gospel is understood in two parts: Book of Signs (1st half) and Book of Glory (2nd half) • Only John reports the raising of Lazarus, which is the primary representation of all the miracles, and causes the religious authorities to “bring down the axe.”

  3. Introducing the story • Everyone tells Martha that Lazarus will rise again • They mean well; they’re speaking a truth. Jesus comes along; says the same thing: Martha affirms “I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” (v24) • She understood that truth would be a long way off (and it probably didn’t give much comfort in the moment.)

  4. Otherresurrections • 1 Ki 17:7 – Elijah raises Sidonian widow’s son • 2 Ki 4:8 – Elisha raises Shunammite woman’s son • Mk 5:22 – raising of Jairus’ daughter • Lk 7:11 – son of widow of Nain is raised

  5. Jesus’ rising is unique Of all recorded resurrections, Jesus is the only one who rose and never died again! It points the way to the future of every believer. 1Cor 15:20 “(Jesus) has become the first of a great harvest of those who will be raised to life again.” A Christian (former Muslim) in Africa tells his story. Do you have a story to tell?

  6. Another opportunity • Resurrection can and should be something other than, or more than, the raising to life of a dead body. • Jesus longs to “raise up” His Church! • Jesus wants to “raise up” dying marriages! • Jesus longs to “raise up” rebellious children and draw the prodigal child home! • Jesus delights in “raising up” finances to bring glory to His name!

  7. I am the life • Jn 11:26 “He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives & believes in Me will never die.” • We will experience fully later (in eternity) what we can enjoy now richly. • Only Jesus can offer a new life here on earth because only Jesus is the source of all life, physical, emotional, and eternal.

  8. The lockyear principle “Every touch leaves an impression.” When we are touched by the risen Savior, it leaves an impression on our lives…it should be such an obvious impression that others can see it. We live our lives out differently because we are embraced by Him who is divine and supernatural rather than ordinary & natural.

  9. Are you truly alive? • Jn 10:10 “The thief comes only to kill, steal, and destroy, but I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” • Jn 5:21 – Jesus is equated with the Father as One who gives resurrection life • What is resurrection life? • Jn 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God & Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

  10. The challenge… • Has your life been touched by the Risen Savior in such a way that the “evidence” can be seen by those who are observing your life? • Is your life a reflection of the “fulness” of the Godhead dwelling in you? (the abundant life of Christ can be seen?)

  11. The encouragement • Col 2:9 & 10 “For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form giving complete expression of the divine nature. And you are in Him, made full and have come to fullness of life in Christ ;you too are filled with the Godhead; Fr, Son & HS.” (Amp. Bible)
