  1. The Great White Throne Judgment Revelation 20:11-14

  2. Jesus is on the Throne since all judgment has been committed to Him. V.11 (John 5:22) • The passing away of the old order of the heavens and earth from Genesis 1:1 are done away with. • They were renovated during the Millennium but were polluted by mans last revolt. Rev 20:7-10

  3. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men… 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness • 2 Peter 3:7-11

  4. This judgment is for all unbelievers of all time. • This is not to determine if they are going to Heaven or Hell • The purpose of this judgment is to determine the degree of punishment • Based on: • Degrees of sinfulness • Greater or lesser light or knowledge and the response to that light • Works

  5. 20 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you." Matt. 11:20-24

  6. 47 And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more. Luke 12:47-48

  7. 11 Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin." John 19:11

  8. Books are used in the judgment. v.12: • Book of life-the name of every person who was ever born. Psalm 139:16 • Those who believe have their names retained in the Book of Life. Rev. 3:5 • Those who are unsaved have their name blotted out of the Book of Life Psalm 69:28

  9. Other books v.12 • Contain the accounts of one’s deeds and responses. What is written here determines the degree of punishment • The Lamb’s Book of Life/Book of Righteousness: This book contains the names of every individual who believe and will believe. This was written before the earth was created. Psalm 69:28; Rev. 13:8; 17:8b.

  10. The Second Resurrection v.13 • It is composed of unbeleivers only • It contains stages • The Antichrist (First fruits) • All other unbeleivers 1000 years later. • The dead bodies of all unbelievers will be reunited with their souls that have been in Hades/Hell. • Then, they will be judged on the basis of their works.

  11. The Second Death: the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:14-15) • Gehenna or the Lake of Fire is the eternal abode of the lost and will be a place of torment for not only the soul but the body as well. • No one is currently in the Lake of Fire • During the Old Testament period, the righteous and the unrighteous went to the Sheol, Hades, Abaddon, or the Pit. • It contained two compartments. (Luke 16:19-31.) • Hell or Hades: the place for the unrighteous where they were tormented in their soul.

  12. Abraham’s Bosom or Paradise was the place for the righteous and was a place of comfort. • Neither of the groups went to Heaven • The two sides could see each other and communicate with each other • The two sides were separated by a great gulf that did not permit one to cross over to the other side

  13. When Jesus died he paid the price for all future and past sins (Rom. 3:25; Heb 9:15) • Thus, the sins of the OT Saints were removed finally and could be allowed to go to Heaven. • While Jesus body remained in the tomb, His soul went down into the Paradise side of Sheol/Hades announcing that the atonement had been made. (Matt. 12:40, Eph 4:8-10; 1 Peter 3:18-19.) • Jesus predicted this. (Matt 12:40)

  14. Peter said he declared the guarantee of their future judgment to the unrighteous in Hell. (1 Peter 3:18-19) • Jesus never descedned into the Hell part of Sheol but to the paradise part of Sheol and pronouced the judgment across the great gulf. • At the time of His ascension, all the souls of the Old Testament saints were removed out of Paradise and brought into Heaven. Eph. 4:8-10

  15. 8 Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." 9 (Now this, "He ascended"--what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.

  16. Today, when a believer dies their soul goes to Heaven to be with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8; Phil. 1:23. • Their bodies await their resurrection. • Today, when an unbeliever dies, their soul goes down into Hell/Hades/Sheol. • Their bodies await their resurrection. • Hell/Hades/Sheol will then be destroyed.

  17. The Lake of Fire/Descriptive phrases: • Fire • Judgment • outer darkness • unquenchable fire • eternal fire • eternal destruction/torment • furnace of fire • blackness of darkness/opposite of light • Second death/spiritual death

  18. The State of the unbeliever in the Lake of Fire: • weeping and gnashing of teeth • unholy associations • Suffering the wrath of God • Total deprivation of Divine favor • Endless disturbance of life • Pain in the body and soul • Pangs of conscience • anguish • Despair • torment • Eternal state of conscience
