  2. when she was born\when she died? • Mary mackillop was born on the 15th of January in 1842. • she died in 1909 on the 18th of August.

  4. what were her jobs? • Mary had three different jobs, these were a clerk ,a governess and a teacher. • From  her  teens  to  mid­twenties  Mary  supported the family, working in a stationery business and then as a school  teacher  and  governess.  When  she  was twenty­four  she took the first of  what were to be  many courageous steps in her life.

Mary’s Work • At  the  time  she  was  working  as  a  governess  in  Penola, South Australia. She wanted to serve the  poor,  particularly  by  educating  the  “bush  children”.  • With  the  encouragement  and  help  of Father  Julian  Tenison  Woods, the  Parish  Priest  of Penola,  she  opened  a  school  in  a  stable  on  19  March, 1866.

  6. What was her goal ? • The first school set the pattern of the many to come. •  It was for the children  of  the  working  class.  • The  education  it  provided  was  basic  and  thorough, aiming to make the children independent, employabe and well­grounded in their religion.

  7. where did she live? Mary mackillop grew up in Brunswick street Fitzroy Melbourne and moved to Penola in 1860 when she was 18

What makes her a hero? • Mary is a hero because she taught poor children for no money • Mary MacKillop founded the institute of the  Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in  1867  –  the  first  order  of  nuns  established  by  an  Australian. • She established an educational system which spread across Australia and New Zealand; • She developed institutions which gave people in crisis a chance of survival and a quality of life;
