So here’s what we know at this point • Mining and railroads drew people out west • The mining boom was short-lived (1850s to 1880s) • The Transcontinental Railroad connected the country and changed how we lived, did business and traveled. • Westward expansion meant the decline of American Indian civilizations. • Expansion meant the near extinction of buffalo. • The gold rush was replaced by cattle kingdoms and farming.

  3. Why Go Westward? WHICH IS TRUE? • “I was told there was free land.” • “I was told the native Indians are cruel savages.” • “There’s an economic depression back East.” • “I want a better life for my family.”

  4. The Great Oklahoma Land Rush • In one day (April 22, 1889) over 6 MILLION acres of land were “claimed” by white settlers. • Where are the Native Americans in this scene from the film Far and Away?
