  1. Calculating concentrations

  2. amount of solute in mol • volume of solution in dm3 concentration in mol/dm3 =

  3. This triangle is another way of helping you with concentration calculations:

  4. Follow this example calculation. Find the concentration of 500 cm3 of a solution containing 4.5 g of sodium chloride. • Moles of sodium chloride = mass ÷ molar mass = 4.5 g ÷ 58.5 g/mol = 0.077 mol • Volume of solution = 500 ÷ 1000 = 0.5 dm3 • Concentration of solution = 0.077 mol ÷ 0.5 dm3 = 0.154 mol/dm3

  5. Practise rearranging the equation: amount of solute in mol volume of solution in dm3 • Calculate the concentration of a 250 cm3 solution containing 0.1 mol of solute. • 0.1 mol ÷ 0.25 dm3 = 0.4 mol/dm3 concentration in mol/dm3 =

  6. amount of solute in mol volume of solution in dm3 2. Calculate the number of moles of solute in 2 dm3 of a 0.5 mol/dm3 solution. • 0.5 mol/dm3 × 2 dm3 = 1 mol concentration in mol/dm3 =

  7. amount of solute in mol volume of solution in dm3 3. Calculate the volume of a 2 mol/dm3 solution that contains 0.5 mol of solute. • 0.5 mol ÷ 2 mol/dm3 = 0.25 dm3 concentration in mol/dm3 =
