  1. Termpus CD_JEP-41105-2006(MK)EDUCATION SYSTEM IN FORENSIC SCIENCES FOR THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia

  2. Department for Criminal Technique • The Department for criminal technique is one of the organizational units within the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MoI). • The work of this institution composes of providing material evidences, necessary to initiate investigation procedure. For this purpose, the personnel at the Department performs numerous appropriate analysis and according to the received results prepare criminal expert testimonies. • When necessary, the experts take part in crime scene investigations, as well as in court proceedings acting as experts in the field of their work. • The expert testimonies are conducted upon request in most of the cases of the regional Sectors and Sections of Internal Affairs, but also upon requests by the Courts and the Public Prosecutors. • The Department is divided in several organizational units (sectors, sections, divisions) each of them with its appropriate tasks and competencies.

  3. The Department consists of: _____________________________ 2 researchers with PhD, 5 with MSc , 42 with BSc degree, others with a high-school diploma • From the 42 members with university degree, 60% are with natural and technical sciences, 40% are with social sciences degree.

  4. PEOPLE versus EQUIPMENT • DNA analysis complete lab-equipment • Gas chromatograph mass detector – Q • Atomic absorption spectrophotometer • HPLC with DAD detector and auto-sampler • FTIR spectrometer • IBIS - Integrated ballistics iden. system • Ballistics comparison microscope • Forensic comparison microscopes • Stereomicroscopes • Biological binocular microscope 2 PhD 5 MSc 42 BSc

  5. COMMON TOPICS OF INTEREST (fields with a lack of knowledge) • Basics of the forensic sciences • CSI - Crime Scene Investigation • Forensic analysis of traces • Forensic informatics • Statistical data procession • Criminal science and criminal law • Experts as witnesses • Methodology of scientific-research work • Statistical methods in forensics

  6. 4. PHYSICS IN FORENSICS • Analysis of mechanical traces (traces on locks, chains, safe deposit boxes, cash register, traces of tools, traces on stepping surfaces from foot wears and pneumatics) • Analysis of traces from fire arms • Preparation of ballistic expert testimonies • Analysis of authenticity of identification numbers on motor and trailers • Examination on traces from fires and explosions • Expert testimonies on explosive devices and improvised explosive devices • Expert testimonies on traces from traffic accidents (lights, pneumatics of vehicles, etc.) • Examination and analysis of documentation from an inspection of vehicles for the purpose of detecting faked traffic accidents.

  7. Topics from Physics with a lack of knowledge and expertise at MoI • Contemporary methods for examining mechanical traces and traces on stepping (pressing) surfaces from pneumatics (pneumatic databases etc.) • Contemporary methods for ballistic examination and software for ballistic calculations, as well as customized software for ballistic calculation, as well as software for 3D animations • New methods for expertise on the authenticity on imprinted identification numbers in vehicles, as well as to all types of serial numbers (metal – iron, aluminum, plastics, etc.) • Contemporary methods on examination of traces from fires (causes, appearances, examinations, spreading, etc.)

  8. …. more • Contemporary methods on examinations of traces of explosions and manners of reconstruction of the explosive devices • Contemporary methods for examination and expertise of traces of traffic accidents (break marks, deviation marks, software for reconstruction of traffic accidents, analysis of the vehicle damage, as well as estimation of the objective and subjective reasons for the accidents), analysis of vehicle lights • Using microscopy in forensic physics • Analysis of sounds and voices. • Voice identification from recorded analogue and digital audio material. • GAMMA spectroscopy analysis of radioactive contaminated biological material. • And more…
