  3. Solution – a Data Warehouse • “A subject-oriented, integrated, non-volatile, time-variant collection of data used in support of management decisions” – Bill Inmon • A business-relevant collection of data from various sources • Contains all of the items needed to satisfy reporting requirements, regardless of their source • Separate database from the transaction systems • Read-only • Data is updated only in the source system • Refreshed/updated regularly • Designed for reporting • Enable easy review of summary information with drill to additional details

  4. Current Data Warehouse Initiatives • Existing data warehouse containing Employee and Appointment information • Updated nightly from HRIS • Uses Oracle Discoverer as the end user tool • Delivers 6 canned queries for users • Financials data warehouse being implemented • Data design (called a Star Schema) and development tools from Decision Point Software • Will include nightly update of data from Oracle Financials • PO, AP, AR, GL, GM, LD • Uses Decision Point DecisionCast as end user tool • Will deliver a number of canned queries, reports, alerts & dashboards

  9. Future Data Warehouse Plans • Continue to add reports, dashboards, queries on existing data in the warehouse • Ultimate goal to move most reporting out of the transaction applications and into the warehouse • Continue to add new data sets to the warehouse • Procurement Card transactions, Expense Reports, Purchase Requisitions, Labor Schedules • Supporting financial information from feeder systems – e.g. Telecom, FMS Work Orders, Bookstore, etc. • Student, alumni, benefits, applicant, property data • Move the existing HR data from the Discoverer data warehouse into the Decision Point data warehouse so that all data is available from one warehouse using one end user tool. • Evaluate available end user tools
