What is a cinquain? • A cinquain is a five-line poem that has special syllable counts. • A cinquain poem has its own unique format.
What is the layout? Line 1: A one-word line, should be a noun. This is your subject. Line 2: Two adjectives about the subject. Line 3: Three verbs that end in –ing that are about the subject. Line 4: Four words about a feeling of the subject. Line 5: One word synonym about subject.

What is a thesaurus? How do I use a thesaurus?
A thesaurus… …is a dictionary that gives alternate words or synonyms. …can be used online as well. …can also be found of inside of a dictionary.
Using a thesaurus…in the classroom. • Go over to the book shelf and take one down. • Search for the word you that you want just like you would while using a dictionary. • The alternative word will be listed. Just take your pick!
Using a thesaurus…interactively • Go to an assigned computer. • Go online. • Type in: www.thesaurus.com • Once on the page type in the word that you would like to replace and hit SEARCH • Find the appropriate definition for the word that you are searching. • Select a synonym from the list of options.
Let’s do it together! • At your computer click on the internet explorer icon: • Type in www.thesaurus.com for the website. • Type in the word fuzzy. • What comes up for synonyms? • What is other word could you use?
How to start: • Start by using the Gather Your Thoughts work sheet to get ideas on what subject you want to use. • Next use the Cinquain Graphic Organizer worksheet to start your poem. • Be sure to use both types of thesauruses to create synonyms in your poem! • Put the finishing touches on your cinquain.
