  2. June 13, 1992 - Armenia signed the UN FCCC and ratified on May 14, 1993 • December 2002 - National Assembly of Armenia ratified the Kyoto Protocol • Designated National Authority (DNA) for CDM – Ministry of Nature Protection

  3. MAIN BARRIERS FOR IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY (EE) • High Deterioration of Basic Funds • Limited Application of Energy Saving Measures • Weak Mechanisms in Control and Regulations • Weak National Capacity

  4. ARMENIA’S POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION • Electricity and heat power generation • Municipal heat supply • Transport Technical Potential for GHG reduction: 19.55 mln t CO2 for the period of 2000-2020, including utilization of revewable energy resources

  5. Capacity Building for Climate Technology Transfer and CDM (TRAC) Preparatory Assistance (PA) –2003-2004 • Develop a full-fledged programme focused on capacity building and technical assistance for the establishment of the Climate Technology Transfer Centre. • Promote climate technology transfer through public-private partnership • Support demonstration of selected Armenian environmentally sound technologies at international technology exhibitions/fairs (13-17 September, Bahrain).

  6. Full-Range Proposal Main Objectives • Facilitate the promotion and transfer of environmentally sound and economically viable technologies and know-how; • Generate a multi-sectoral understanding of the opportunities offered by the UNFCCC and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol and other cooperation mechanisms; • Develop necessary institutional arrangements and human capacities to identify, formulate, assess, approve and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation projects within the context of sustainable development.

  7. Expected Outputs Objective 1: • Strengthened National capacities for transfer of environmentally sound and economically viable technologies and know-how in/from Armenia; • Improved mechanisms and procedures to promote innovative and new technology transfer;

  8. Expected Outputs cont. Objective 2: • Increased awareness on new developments in the process of transfer of environmentally sound technologies and know-how through briefings, round table discussions both in Yerevan and in the regions of Armenia; • Increased awareness on the UNFCCC and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol through brief; • Trained concerned parties on technology transfer and CDM ings, round table discussions both in Yerevan and in the regions of Armenia .

  9. Expected Outputs cont. Objective 3: • Strengthened National capacities to implement GHG mitigation projects in the context of sustainable development; • Developed national criteria and requirements to ensure coherent, justifiable and transparent assessment and implementation of GHG mitigation projects .
