  10. Virtual Work Placement Involves significant student effort (48 hours +) Initial example built around a case study: a wind farm proposal Innovative ‘proof of concept’ tool to support learning about real-world application of digital geographic information in a work-place context Focus on problem solving using geographical information The VP is a virtual learning world, involving collaboration, a virtual organisation, role-play, active and creative learning, and gameplay

  11. JORUM • JISC Online Repository for Learning and Teaching Materials • Oct 2002 – July 2005 • Area A: preparing for JORUM service for all F/HEIs from August 2005 • Area B: supporting the JISC Exchange for Learning Programme • Session this afternoon • http://www.jorum.ac.uk

  12. What does a L&T repository do? • Hosts any digital resource that can be used to support teaching and learning • Provides “virtual objects” that reference materials (on and offline) held elsewhere • Offers the same facilities as a library i.e. search, browse, locate, preview and borrow • Offers additional facilities e.g. upload and publish, myLibrary and may package learning objects into assemblies of content • Delivers learning objects/packages that can be played in a VLE, and resources for use by tutors e.g. lesson plans

  13. Why a JISC repository service? • Provides hosting service for JISC-funded content and pointers to content held on other servers • Will work within the JISC Information Environment, especially with the HE Academy “Connect” service (L&T Portal) • Part of a “landscape” of distributed repositories • Promotes sharing, re-use and re-purposing of expensive content • Stands as a national statement of the importance of creating interoperable, sustainable materials
