  12. Using Synonyms • Synonyms are words that have similar or the same meaning as other words. Using synonyms helps readers relate new words to other words they might already know. • Typical • Embrace • Attempt • Joy • Rage • Spy • Confess

  13. Author’s Purpose • An author’s purpose is the reasons for writing, such as to persuade, inform, entertain, or express ideas. • An author does not usually state a purpose for writing. Readers must use clues in the text to figure out the important ideas. Look through the theme reader to identify clues. • What does the author want you to learn? • Why did the author write this? • What clues help you determine the author’s purpose?
