  1. On the Banks Today’s Goal: • To learn how human activities can cause erosion • To learn that humans are also the solution to erosion • To learn how to prevent excess erosion and sediment

  2. On the Banks • Erosion is a natural process whereby the earth’s surface is broken apart by weathering and the pieces are transported by gravity, wind, or water

  3. On the Banks • Excess erosion results in too much sediment in our streams, lakes, and rivers

  4. On the Banks • Sediment is one of our biggest sources of water pollution

  5. On the Banks • Excess sediment: • Makes it difficult for fish to breathe • Settles to the bottom of streams and smothers fish eggs • Clogs storm sewer pipes which can lead to flooding • Disrupts boating activities by making rivers and lakes more shallow

  6. On the Banks • Vegetation is one of the best, and least expensive ways to prevent erosion Stones and Walls can help too

  7. On the Banks • Weathering is the breaking down or breaking apart of earth materials, such as rock or soil, by wind, water, ice, etc.
