  1. TAR 3 TAR 2: In your opinion which of the following SGQs is the best one to use in a discussion? Yes/ No, Recall, Comprehension, or Synthesis. Why? Please refer to your notes for help.

  2. HOWWILL WEUSE SGQSANDSOCRATICCIRCLES MR. LITZ 9/10/11 PARK M.S.

  3. WHATISASOCRATICCIRCLE? A Socratic circle gives us an opportunity to discuss a text in depth. It also allows us to share our thoughts, prove our hypotheses, refute (argue) and refine by TALKING to each other. To be honest this will help you become a stronger reader and gives us time to just discuss what we think.

  4. SOCRATICSET-UPANDRULES Set- Up 1. We will read a text. 2. Develop Comprehension and Synthesis Questions for the discussion.  3. Sit in an inner and outer circle.  4. Respond to the question and then to each other.  5. Goals: Deepen our understanding, rid ourselves of misunderstandings, and improve our reading. Rules 1. Speak loudly 2. Do not raise hand 3. Refer to the text (Use it to support yourself) 4. Ask for clarification 5. This seminar is your  responsibility!

  5. Inner Circle: • A volunteer will pose an opening question. • Each inner circle member is responsible for making comments. For this discussion, a minimum of one comment is required to earn a grade. Students must respond to each other by NAME and make eye contact. • Earn points in form, audience, • and tone of responses.

  6. Outer Circle:- Monitor the discussion by mapping (Drawing arrows from speaker to next speaker)- Take notes on the questions we are discussing and who is saying it- Scorecard Listen and think about what is beingdiscussed!

  7. Scoring Ask a question/ Answer a question    +1 Do not interrupt the discussion of a previous question. Write it down or pose it to the last speaker. Connect comments    +2Make this clear by restating another person’s comment in your own words, then making a clear connection to your own comment. Refer to the text     +2 Going back and looking at the text is essential to this conversation. When you refer to the text give a page or line number. Allow the group to find it then make your comments/ response. Interrupting another student -2Interruption is rude and shows you are not listening. You should be thinking of your response. On the other hand, two people may begin talking at the same time. This is not interrupting. The person who has said less ought to be allowed to speak first. Making faces, rude, sarcastic, or throwaway remarks -3Although it may sound weird, your sincerity is needed in this discussion. You may not lessen your ideas by added comments like, “I don’t care about the story”, etc. These statements take away from the discussion and show you are not actually engaged.
