  1. Automatic Meter Reading for Sub-Stations & Consumer Meters By : Rajesh Sharma Director RS IT & Power Hub Pvt. Ltd.

  2. About US Our expertise lies in Integrating Technologies for the people • Strong domain knowledge in real time data applications like control and automation software (SCADA), Plant Intelligence • solutions, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Batch • Plants automation and Interfacing plant data to ERP systems. • Exhaustive knowledge of complex control system hardware and software. • Expertise in Device driver development, latest IT tools, databases and • report generation software. • Hands on- field experienced people. • An ISO 9001:2000 Certified organization. • 'India Advantage': high-quality low-cost services

  3. AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) Every Utility / Discom is fighting to find a solution for this problem

  4. PROBLEMS • Protocol • Communication Ports • Existing Meters • Technology • Implementation Time • Few More

  5. PROBLEMS • Protocol • No common, Standard / open protocol • is available in the energy meters available nor the meters which are being purchased. • Standard Protocol :- • PACT (Multi dropping not possible) • Open Protocol :- • Modbus ( Values are integers have to use • multiplying factor at software end) • IEC 101 (No known meter available)

  6. PROBLEMS • Communication Port • No common type of port is available in the • energy meters available nor the meters which are being purchased. • The mixture of Optical, RS-232 and RS-485 is available and none has the record of the ports. • Recommended :- • RS-232 for the meters installed individually • RS-485 for the meters installed in groups (Substation, Group Metering)

  7. PROBLEMS • Existing Meters • As these meters vary in technologies, makes, Protocols, communication ports, etc. which creates a difficult situation for AMR implementation teams. • Recommended :- • Request the manufacturer to take back old meters and replace with new ones, as in many a cases it is only firmware up-gradation or minor modification.

  8. PROBLEMS • Technology • As these meters vary in technologies, makes, protocols, communication ports, etc. which creates a difficult situation for AMR implementation teams. • Recommended :- • Request the reshuffle / change energy meters to create the situation for the AMR supplier to opt. one technology / methodology for the system. • Example : Change all substation meters with the ones having RS-485 port & Modbus protocol.

  9. PROBLEMS • Implementation Time • As these meters vary in technologies, makes, protocols, communication ports, Multiplying factors etc. which creates a difficult situation for AMR implementation teams. • Recommended :- • Request the reshuffle / change energy meters to create the situation for the AMR supplier to opt. one technology / methodology for the system. • This will reduce the AMR implementation time drastically.

  10. PROBLEMS • Few More • AMR Technologies (Which ?) • Central Control room Softwares (Scalability ?) • Audit Reports (What ?)

  11. RS IT Solutions for AMR • GPRS Technology for Substation AMR • Using Viola Arctic GPRS Router • Rf & GPRS blend for Consumer Metering • Using Viola Eserv & MCM (Meter Communication Module)

  12. Achieving Real time AMR

  13. Comprehensive AMR- One Network Scalable distribution network* Industrial consumers* Agriculture sector* Domestic sector

  14. Control Room Network Example GPRS INTERNET V P N Viola M2M Gateway Field Side • Integrate with Billing Software • Real time view of entire distribution • Instant control on consumers • Two-way connection establishment • Secure end-to-end communication (VPN) • GPRS devices are part of company LAN

  15. GPRS FOR SUBSTATION AMR

  16. GPRS • General Packet Radio Service • Wireless packet data channel • Based on GSM technology and networks • Designed for TCP/IP traffic • Dynamic radio channel allocation • Faster data transfer compared to GSM data • Public network, Global - low initial investments

  17. GPRS Arctic Key Features • Industrial grade GPRS router • Expands Ethernet devices over GPRS network • Easy and quick to install • Firewall and VPN for secure communication • 10/100 Base-T Ethernet connection • Mobile operator independent static IP addressing with Viola M2M Gateway

  18. Hardware Processor Environment 32 bit RISC processor 8 MB FLASH memory 32 MB SDRAM memory Power 6 – 26 VDC nominal input voltage 1 – 5 W power consumption Resettable fuse and ESD protection Other Temperature sensor, real time clock Environment Temperature ranges: –20 to +70 °C –30 to +85 °C (storage) Humidity 5 to 85 % RH

  19. Key Features Configuration and Management : The Arctic GPRS Router is configured using a www browser. A conventional console interface is also provided. The software of Arctic GPRS Router can be updated over the network. Network Protocols : PPP, IP, ICMP, UDP, TCP, ARP, DNS, DHCP, FTP, TFTP, HTTP, SNMP, POP3, SMTP Tunneling (VPN) : SSHv2 server and client SSHv1 server and client Communication Protocols : Modbus, Modbus Ethernet, Transparent Mode, IEC 101, IEC 104, etc

  20. EDGE • Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution • EDGE is update for GPRS, also referred as EGPRS • More efficient radio modulation than in GPRS (8-PSK) • Speed is about 3-5 times more than in GPRS • 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots and theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s • Uses same base stations and core network as GPRS/GSM, easy and cost-effective for operators • Typical download speed about 15 kilobytes/s

  21. ESERV (RF) WITH MCM • Separate remote meters equipped with meter commonication module (optical port to radio) • Local-area radio used between remote meters and ESERV-AMR remote meter(s) MCM LOCAL-AREA RADIO SERVER local meter(s) GPRS Modbus RS-485 ESERV-AMR

  22. GPRS & RF COMBINATION • Industrial grade GPRS router • Expands devices over RF network • Easy and quick to install • 1 KM Line of sight Low Power Radio • Free radio band width frequency • Protocol Independent versions PACT or MODBUS
