  5. The Big Idea • With more money and time available, Americans began purchasing Televisions. Comedies, action adventure shows, and game shows captivated audiences. Hollywood tried to regain audiences with 3-D films and panoramic screens. A new youth culture developed during this time embracing rock-n-roll. although many african americans were unable to perform on television, many still had a profound impact on rock-n-roll.

  9. RISE OF TELEVISION • Movies lost viewers • 1/5 of theaters closed • tried to get viewers back • Tried to make movies exciting e.g. 3-D films or panoramic movies • Large Screens • 1946 - 82 million went to the movies • 1950 - 36 million went to the movies

  10. Radio • listeners left to watch Television • Radio changed to playing music, news, public service programs

  11. Rock-n-Roll • Alan Freed - saw youth buying African American rhythm and blues records • Loud & heavy beat - great for dancing • Songs about - cars, girls, romance, and political issues

  12. ARTISTS • Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley • Elvis - gospel singer • Ed Sullivan wouldn’t allow him on show • many parents condemned rock-n-roll - as Loud, mindless, & dangerous music • Created “Generation gap”

  13. African American Entertainers • Struggled to find acceptance • TV shut them out • Had own venus, clubs, very little national exposure • Nat King Cole - had a 15 min music show / cxld

  14. African American Influence on Rock-n-Roll • Chuck Berry & Little Richard influenced The Beatles • Influenced other 1960’s groups Little Richard, The Drifters, The Supremes

  15. Influential Writers of the 1950’s • “The Beat Movement” • Jack Kerouac - Published “On the Road” in 1957 • About adventures in a car with a thief and a con artist • Shocked many readers of the time • Went on to become a classic in modens American Literature
