  1. COAL Coal Consumption & Resources

  2. Current Coal Consumption2005 values

  3. Current Energy from Coal

  4. Current CO2 from Coal

  5. 2030 Coal Consumption

  6. 2030 Energy from Coal

  7. 2030 CO2 from Coal

  8. US Coal Resources Recoverable US coal reserves: 264 billion tons

  9. Simple Lifetime Calculation Recoverable US coal reserves: 264 billion tons Assuming annual consumption stays at 1.1 billion tons, US supply will last 264/1.1 = 240 years.

  10. Growth in US coal consumption US coal consumption is growing at 1% per year 70 Doubling Time = ---------------- Growth Rate Doubling Time = 70 years So US coal consumption could go to 2.2 billion tons in 2075. This increasing consumption rate would mean that US coal supplies would be consumed in about 120 years.

  11. Global Coal Resources Recoverable global coal reserves: 1000 billion tons

  12. Simple Lifetime Calculation Recoverable global coal reserves: 1000 billion tons Assuming annual consumption stays at 6.5 billion tons, global supply will last 1000/6.5 = 150 years.

  13. Growth in global coal consumption Global coal consumption is growing at 2% per year 70 Doubling Time = ---------------- Growth Rate Doubling Time = 35 years So global coal consumption could go to 13 billion tons in 2040. This increasing consumption rate would mean that global coal supplies would be consumed in about 70 years

  14. CO2 emission Assuming global coal consumption grew at 2% for 70 years, it would double twice from 6.5 billion tons per year to 26 billion tons per year. Energy produced = 4 x 122 Qbtu = 488 Qbtu. CO2 emission = 4 x 12 billion MT = 48 billion MT

  15. Conclusion • Current trends in coal consumption will lead to major problems: • Coal resource depleted within 70 years • Climate change due to high CO2 emissions in near future
