What is a topic sentence? • It tells the reader what the paragraph will be about. • It helps the paragraph stay focused • This is why they can be nicknamed “control freaks!”
Rules • It is usually the first sentence in the paragraph. • There should be ONE topic sentence in each paragraph. • It should make a general statement with a wide enough scope to cover the rest of the sentences in the paragraph.
Rules • A topic sentence must not be too broad or too narrow. • It must have a strong direction.
TEA TIME! • When it comes to writing paragraphs, it’s TEA time! Topic Evidence Analyze
Example #1 • It was a beautiful afternoon. The birds were singing in the garden. The air was cool and breezy as I ate a hearty lunch in the courtyard. After I watched my favorite cartoon, I took a one-hour nap, and dreamed of more wonderful things to come. • “It was a beautiful afternoon” is the topic sentence because… • If you read just that sentence and no more, you are left to ask yourself, “WHY was it a beautiful afternoon?” A well-written paragraph will then go on to give you EVIDENCE to support the TOPIC. • In this case, it does: singing birds, cool/breezy air, a hearty lunch, and a nap.
Example #2 • Soccer is arguably the most popular sport in the world. It is played by over 250 million people around the globe, including 40 million women. Added to that are the number of spectators in the stadiums, and the millions watching on TV at home. • What is the topic sentence? • What is the evidence supporting it?
Example #3 • People can avoid burglaries by taking certain precautions. Alarm systems have been proven to turn criminals away, even by seeing the sticker on windows and doors that lets them know the house is armed. Additionally, one must always remember to lock their doors and pull down their shades when not at home to prevent any wandering eyes of passersby to get ideas about taking what is not theirs. • What is the topic sentence? • What is the evidence supporting it?
