  1. How to Take Care of Library Books Central School Library

  2. How to Take Care of Library Books • Wash your hands before reading library books. Sticky, grubby fingers will leave marks on the pages.

  3. How to Take Care of Library Books • Use a bookmark. Don't damage the pages by using clips or dog-earing the corners. Select a thin bookmark that slides into the pages rather than clips over them. Using a bookmark will also protect the spine -- books that are placed face-down, with open pages, tend to end up with broken or damaged spines.

  4. How to Take Care of Library Books • Avoid moisture and water. Keep books out of humidity to prevent mildew, protect them from the rain when carrying them out and about and don't read in the bath or beside a pool. Water damage is nearly impossible to fix in a book. Remember books are not coasters for glasses or tea and coffee cups.

  5. How to Take Care of Library Books • Keep the book out of direct sunlight. Sunlight fades cover images and bleaches the pages. Read your library books in the shade.

  6. How to Take Care of Library Books • Give the book space on a clean shelf. Avoid stacking books tightly on a shelf as this puts strain on the spines and the material of hard covers. Books stacked tightly together develop creases in them. Get rid of dust before placing the book on a shelf

  7. How to Take Care of Library Books • Keep books away from pets and children. Puppies in particular will have great fun chewing up a nice new book, and children might like to draw on the pages or tear them out.

  8. How to Take Care of Library Books • Respect the books. Don't highlight paragraphs, write notes in the margins or doodle on the covers. Take care of the book as if it were your own. Make sure it won't get damaged if you put it in your bag and be careful of who you let handle it.

  9. How to Take Care of Library Books • Inform the librarian of any damage to the book. Don't try to fix it yourself--let a professional deal with it.
