  3. Project Plan Feasability study Project idea Realization – Project report – Application documents Application MP Approved Contract mars 2005 Okt 2005 Jan 2006 Dec 2006

  4. Project Idea • Initiated by: Öresund Logistics, Lund University and UBQ • Shuttle: Sweden – Continent, to use railway in greater extent over Öresund bridge • Problems/obstacles: Frames for the project were defined within the “Catalyse Actions”

  5. Feasibility Study 3 barriers • Punctuality/Reliability • Technique – different ATC – and electrical systems • Market – monopoly, difficulties for new operators to establish on the railway market

  6. The EU Marco Polo programme The aim of the Marco Polo programme is to support a shift from road transport to other means of transportation

  7. The Three steps of the Marco Polo programme • A shift from roads to short sea shipping, rail and inland waterways • Elimination of technical and structural obstacles • Enhancement of knowledge in freight logistics and new opportunities

  8. Budget Scandinavian Shuttle € 2.500.000 14% Marco Polo € 16.975.000 86%

  9. Scandinavian Shuttle An efficient transportation link between the Continent and Scandinavia Copenhagen Malmö Rotterdam

  10. Environment • A widely-recognized model which calculates and shows the environmental impact of various forms of transport • Finds the environmentally-balanced logistics solutions of the future

  11. Rail volumes Q2, 2009 Total weight in kg

  12. Climate policy scenarios vs. Scandinavian Shuttle

  13. Scandinavian Shuttle brings market benefits

  14. CENTRALIZES ADMINISTRATION PROVIDES MORE EFFICIENT SHIPMENTS TRACK AND CORRECT DEALS WITH ALL COMPLAINTS CONTROL TOWER COORDINATES LOGISTICS PROVIDES DETAILED ENVIRONMENTAL AND SHIPMENT STATISTICS INCLUDES INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS CHOOSES OPTIMAL FORM OF TRANSPORT FOR GIVEN DISTANCES (RAIL, BOAT, ROAD, AIR) REDUCES FIXED COSTS PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT EACH SHIPMENT BY EDI

  15. TRACK AND CORRECT

  16. TRACK AND CORRECT • SMART TERMINALS • Manufactured for durable, maintenance-free, reliable operation, without the need for monitoring or power • Adapted to suit intermodal shipments – monitors the container instead of the vehicle • Includes support for GPS, GSM and other positioning solutions, reporting intervals, calendars and timetables • Remote control of units • Door opening sensors, magnetic switches and temperature gauges

  17. SMART TERMINALS • Manufactured for durable, maintenance-free, reliable operation, without the need for monitoring or power • Adapted to suit intermodal shipments – monitors the container instead of the vehicle • Includes support for GPS, GSM and other positioning solutions, reporting intervals, calendars and timetables • Remote control of units • Door opening sensors, magnetic switches and temperature gauges TRACK AND CORRECT • ALARMS AND REPORTING • Notification in the event of deviations from user-defined parameters such as timetable or temperatures • Reporting tool for flexible, powerful automated reports • Search tool for new and older data, with visualization using tables or maps down to street level for the whole of Europe • Cell phone service functions

  18. SMART TERMINALS • Manufactured for durable, maintenance-free, reliable operation, without the need for monitoring or power • Adapted to suit intermodal shipments – monitors the container instead of the vehicle • Includes support for GPS, GSM and other positioning solutions, reporting intervals, calendars and timetables • Remote control of units • Door opening sensors, magnetic switches and temperature gauges TRACK AND CORRECT • ALARMS AND REPORTING • Notification in the event of deviations from user-defined parameters such as timetable or temperatures • Reporting tool for flexible, powerful automated reports • Search tool for new and older data, with visualization using tables or maps down to street level for the whole of Europe • Cell phone service functions • SECURITY • Shipment security is ensured via alarms to global security companies • The container is monitored instead of the vehicle • Alarms and other incidents can be notified to third parties • The terminals deal with communication challenges on the continent, e.g. GPRS roaming problems and fallback in the event of poor coverage • One system with a full overview of containers and trailers

SMART TERMINALS • Manufactured for durable, maintenance-free, reliable operation, without the need for monitoring or power • Adapted to suit intermodal shipments – monitors the container instead of the vehicle • Includes support for GPS, GSM and other positioning solutions, reporting intervals, calendars and timetables • Remote control of units • Door opening sensors, magnetic switches and temperature gauges TRACK AND CORRECT • ALARMS AND REPORTING • Notification in the event of deviations from user-defined parameters such as timetable or temperatures • Reporting tool for flexible, powerful automated reports • Search tool for new and older data, with visualization using tables or maps down to street level for the whole of Europe • Cell phone service functions • SHIPMENT DATA • Continual data capture from terminal in environments without infrastructure (power and communication) • Shipment data is documented, and can be searched and checked subsequently for compliance with environmental directive, etc. • SECURITY • Shipment security is ensured via alarms to global security companies • The container is monitored instead of the vehicle • Alarms and other incidents can be notified to third parties • The terminals deal with communication challenges on the continent, e.g. GPRS roaming problems and fallback in the event of poor coverage • One system with a full overview of containers and trailers

  20. As we see it……there are only advantages. And society can´t afford not to invest in the future.

  21. Scandinavian Shuttle – 100% just-in-time • Part of the EU’s Marco Polo program • The European Commission’s program for reducing international volumes of goods being transported by road • Based on intermodal sea and rail solutions

  22. A successful EU – project with carrying power that will keep going. We can and we shall!
