Tsuglagkhang Complex - This complex is the official residence of the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet and that is why it holds immense importance for both Tibetans and locals alike. The most important striking features of the Tsuglagkhang complex are its extremely scenic location, the backdrop of beautiful mountains and the epiphany of pine trees and architecture. If your trip has been planned well in advance then the travellers can schedule their bookings to attend a teaching session by HH Dalai Lama himself. To attend the HH Dalai Lama of Tibet’s course, you need to register at the Tibetan Branch Security Office in Mcleodganj for a nominal fee of Rs. 10 and carry a photo id, if you are an Indian citizen. This beautiful discourse takes place in the Tibetan language. The seating in this discourse is strictly on a first come first serve basis. Namgyal Monastery - The Namgyal monastery is the residence of the present Dalai Lama of Tibet. This monastery is considered as one of the most beautiful and perfect places to be at in the world. It was initially established by the second Dalai Lama in Tibet, Nyamgal was re- established by the 14th Dalai lama after his exile from Tibet. This monastery focuses completely on the preservation and conduction of Tibetan Buddhist rituals and practises. If you do get a chance to visit, it is ideal to speak to the monks and talk to them about their learnings and lifestyle and learn from them. The Namgyal monastery is an hour’s drive away from our resort in Himachal Pradesh. Gyuto Monastery - This magnificent monastery is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Dhauladhar ranges. This monastery is the seat of tantric Buddhism in India. This monastery was initially established in the year 1474 in Tibet but was re-established in the year 1959 in the town of Dharamsala in India. There is a vibe of positive vibrations emanated by the lamas that belong to this monastery and bring tranquility to this place due to their practices. Gyuto monastery is a thirty five minute drive away from our resort in Himachal Pradesh. How to behave inside a monastery - While all the monasteries in Dharamshala are welcoming towards tourists, every religious establishment calls for respect towards their sensitivities and culture. Here are some recommendations on what travelers should definitely keep in mind while being inside a monastery and while interacting with monks. Do’s and Don’ts - Clothes – Although the climate in Dharamshala is cold mostly throughout the year, during summers it can be tempting to wear summer dresses or shorts. Ideally, one should be covered below the knees and should wear simple well-covering clothes as a basic respectful etiquette while visiting a monastery. Though not a rule, it is good to cover your shoulders and display a modest body language too while indie a monastery. Clicking Pictures – Monasteries are both a place of worship and a tourist attraction, which makes it difficult to balance the nature of these two contrasting facets. While travelers are tempted to click the place or record the proceedings, it is prohibited in many parts of most monasteries, especially inside the main prayer hall so it is advisable not to click pictures inside the main worship hall of the monastery. Even if it is not explicitly instructed somewhere, one should be very mindful while indulging in photography and mustn’t disturb or disrespect monks or any religious rituals taking place inside the monastery. Always seek permission before clicking pictures wherever you are. Respect – This general rule applies to every place of worship in the world. Show respect to monks especially when they are in prayer or a religious discourse by keeping silence and bowing to them with folded hands as this is their sacred place of worship. Sensitivities of monks - It is considered very rude to point your feet at any Buddhist, so while sitting near monks fold your feet and tuck them under your legs properly. Abstinence is an important aspect of monks’ culture which prohibits them from directly contacting or touching women. Women visitors should keep this in mind and maintain a decent distance while interacting with any of the monks. Some monks do not even accept anything directly from women tourists. So while making an offering, it is best to request a male visitor or companion and hand it over to the monk. While starting a conversation with a monk, it is respectful to sit at the same level as his don’t keep standing while a monk is sitting and start talking to him as it is considered very disrespectful. Peace and serenity are all around you when you visit a monastery because the residents of the monastery, who are the monks, are either mostly busy with studying religious texts or performing rituals. Maintain a general posture of silence and modesty to avoid disrupting their work and lifestyle.
