  1. A One Stop Shop for DRE The Directorate of Research and Enterprise Portal Dr John Donovan HERD, ICT, Arts and Media

  2. The Problem • Where does DIT’s research information reside? • It is not easy to collect research information in DIT (as many as 18 phone calls) • No single place that collates existing information • Multiple instances of the same information being collected • Multiple different standards • Information is incomplete, inaccurate or both • Information collected but not codified • Everything is done by paper intermediates • Impossible to collect consistent and accurate statistics Library Research Seminar

  3. The Consequences • DIT cannot provide accurate research information for • DIT Staff • Funders, Tax payers, Journalists, etc. • Proper research planning. • We have no idea where we stand in relation to our peers. • HEA Grant is partially based on research performance. • Incorrect information – ‘incorrect’ core funding • Research reviews are compromised Library Research Seminar

  4. The Solution: The DRE Portal • Responds to the ‘Challenges to Research Report’ • A single DIT research gateway. • Online registrations for projects and research staff • Resources, procedures, documents, contacts all in one place. • Linked to existing information collections • Internal: HR, Finance, Ethics, Postgrads, Arrow, Asset Register, TT register, InfoEd (aka expertise Ireland), DIT Funding database, Project Registry. • External: Other professional organisations and networking agencies. Funders. Library Research Seminar

  5. What the DRE Portal is NOT • It will not exist in splendid isolation • It will not subsume existing databases. • It will not control any other existing database. • It will not own any existing databases. • It will not be the single or only point of access for any other database. Library Research Seminar

  6. What the DRE Portal is • It will be where a PI can get ALL the information related to their research • project, team, group, centre, programme in one place. • It will be one place where you can contribute to all of its sources. • Information posted in the DRE portal will be available through the other relevant databases. • Post a new publication • Goes to InfoEd profiles • Goes to Arrow (with file if available) • Is attached to a project • Provide consistent, accurate statistics. • It will provide the core data on DIT research for the website. • It will be part of the National Research Information System Library Research Seminar

  7. The DRE Portal Unit of Currency: The Project Library Research Seminar

  8. Why Project Based • Each project in DIT has a unique identification number. • The project number is used or collected in a number of existing databases. • The project registration collects the greatest amount of relevant information. • Each project has a single PI • Using the project as the base unit we can collect a lot of additional information without having to specially request it. Library Research Seminar

  9. What will the DRE Portal be • Standards compliant • XML based • Can provide content feeds for the Terminal 4 tools. • Can accept content feeds from other sources. • CERIF Discipline Descriptors • Modular and Personalisable • Easy to add new functions • Easily Accessible • Simple interfaces • ‘Smart’ Interfaces • Developed internally Library Research Seminar

  10. When? • 3 starting phases • Phase 1 • Complete • DIT Researcher consultations, DIT Heads of Research, Specification • Phase 2 • November 2008 • Online registration of projects • Online RD2 forms • Access to project information • Project staff and teams • Phase 3 • Spring 2009 • Information to external databases (professional networks, etc.) • More procedures to move online • Improved statistics • Improved Planning Library Research Seminar

  11. DRE Portal and the National Research Information System • DRE Portal is designed to be standards compliant • DRE information is compatible with information proposed for the NRIS • NRIS will provide extra functionality for DRE portal. Library Research Seminar
