The Use of Social Validityto Track Outcomes • The University of Toledo Center for Excellence in Autism has begun an ambitious research endeavor in collaboration with other agencies in northwest Ohio to identify the desired goals of the ASD population and whether or not the community is providing services that will help these individuals and their families reach those goals. • The agencies involved will monitor a common set of global progress indicators and jointly publish the results annually. • Families will finally be able to ask for proof of positive outcomes before they engage in services! What Is Social Validity? • The success of intervention strategies should be judged against their impact in bringing about significant lifestyle changes in personal and social outcomes, community-based services and activities, social and material deprivation, the use of medication and restraints to control behavior, and abuse from care staff.   8. What Social Validity Includes.. • Factors that improve the quality of life for the student. • Increased self-esteem, self-determination, individual empowerment, and joy among recipients. From Relevant Interventions to Meaningful Outcomes

What Social Validity Does Not Include… • How will Johnny benefit from using the present progressive language form 10 times per session? • Will it make a difference if Susan can stack six blocks? • Do we really think that Juan's learning to balance on one foot will result in something worthwhile?   10. The Filter of Social Validity Kennedy (2002) proposed the following nine criteria for socially valid service delivery: 1. Is behavior change demonstrated in typical settings? 2. Does intervention promote movement into the least restrictive environment? 3. Is the intervention conducted by families and/or school and community personnel? 4. Is the person's entire day/week impacted by the intervention? 5. Is the intervention maintained over time? 6. Is the intervention enabling and skill building? 7. Is the recipient of the intervention happier? 8. Do secondary consumers value the intervention? 9. Will taxpayers view the intervention as worthy of public funding?
