  1. Fighting the Good Fight • Thomas Bilney 1531 - Burned at the stake. • Hugh Latimer 1555 – Burned at the stake. • Nicholas Ridley 1555 – Burned at the stake. • Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1556 – Burned at the stake.

  2. 1Timothy 1:18-20 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19 holding on to faithand a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

  3. 1. The Charge to Fight the Good Fight • 1Tim. 1:18 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well. • 1 Tim. 4:14 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

  4. Exercise your gift of preaching and exhortation • 2Tim. 1:6,7 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit which God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

  5. 1Tim. 4:11-16 11 Command and teach these things. 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

  6. Remember the Prophetic confirmation at your commissioning by the elders. • 1Tim 4:14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. • Remember your calling and confession. • 1Tim. 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

  7. 2. The Way to Fight the Good Fight • 1Tim. 1:19a holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected • a. Do I Know What I Believe and Why? • John Stott: “If you love God while knowing little about Him, will you love Him less by knowing more about Him?” • Of course not! • The deeper my knowledge of our infinite, loving, merciful, gracious, holy God, the deeper my love will become.

  8. Do I Hold a Good Conscience? • 1 Tim. 1:5 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. • 1 Tim. 3:9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. • 11 Tim. 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.

  9. Note: • Paul standing before the Sanhedrin looked them straight in the eye. And declared, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day”. Acts 23:1 • Standing before Governor Felix he confidently declared “So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.” Acts 24:16 • To the Romans he declared “I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit” Rom 9:1 • John Calvin “A bad conscience is the mother of all heresies”.

  10. Why Fight the Good Fight of The Faith and a Good Conscience? • 1Tim.1; 19b – 20 …which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. • 2Tim. 2:17, 18 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.

  11. Note: In committing them to Satan he was not dooming them to hell but he was handing them over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. • The purpose of handing them over to Satan was remedial so that they would learn not to blaspheme, so that their sinful nature may be destroyed and their spirit might be saved on the day of the Lord.

  12. Paul exercised severe grace, as he explained in 2Thess. 3:14, 15 14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer. • Lord arm us with a faith that you give us and we exercise; and a good conscience that is tuned by God and we exercise in obedience. Amen
