  3. Warm Up • If there was one thing you could change about the culture in the high school community, what would it be?

  7. Key Questions • How can satire be used to identify societal issues of the modern day? • What is the purpose of a stock character?

  8. S.T.E.A.L • You have 15 minutes to finish S.T.E.A.L. chart with partner. • You will read off the characteristics of the S.T.E.A.L. chart to the class (Writing to Learn grade).

The Canterbury Tales Literary Terms • Allegory :Characters or events represent or symbolize ideas and concepts • Ballad: Narrative composition, may also be sung • Characterization: Direct/Indirect • Chivalry: Knightly code of honor. • Frame story: Narrative within a larger story • Irony: • Situational: Outcome is different from what is expected. • Dramatic: Audience knows, character does not. • Verbal: What is said has a different meaning • Prologue: Detailed introduction into a larger work.

  10. The Canterbury Tales Literary Terms Romance: Tales of Chivalry Satire: Literature that ridicules/criticizes an element of society. Vernacular: Language native to a particular region.

Stock Characters • Fictional character based primarily on stereotypes and generalizations gathered from observations in society. • Can be defined through using the elements of S.T.E.A.L. • May appear repeatedly in literary genres. • Why do stock characters in the Canterbury Tales not have real names?

Examples of Stock Characters • Think of examples of stock characters in the following books: • Teenage/high school drama. • A novel set in “Western times”. • A science fiction novel set in outer space. • A medieval romance. • Try to come up with at least 3 examples of stock characters for each type of book.

"Saved by the Bell" Stock Character Analysis • Character name: • Stock Character type: Be specific as to what type of character they are. • Stock Characteristics: Pick 3 characteristics that show that they fit the character type you have chosen. • Use SPECIFIC characteristics seen in this episode. • Remember S.T.E.A.L. • Use COMPLETE SENTENCES!
