  1. The Oxidation of Benzyl-Alcohol Andrew DeLaRiva, PIRE Fellow, Ph.D. Student in Chemical Engineering with Minor in Nano-Science and Micro-Systems (2005-2009 in progress), B.S. Chemical Engineering 2005 UNM, PI: Prof. Abhaya Datye, Chemical Engineering Alcohol Aldehyde Ester • Technical accomplishments: • The production of high surface area oxide supports for the oxidation of benzyl-alcohol • The ability to run benzyl-alcohol reactions under ambient conditions (at room temperature at atmospheric pressure) • Used a low loading of Au to complete reaction, as well as add promoters and bases Major breakthroughs:Able to oxidize benzyl-alcohol under ambient conditions using small amounts of gold, able to synthesize stable gold nanoparticles and enhanced supports for gold alcohol reactions • PIRE Activites: • Interned at Danish Technical University attending a class (NanoCatalysis)andalso at a major catalyst company Haldor Topsøe A/S (total of 6months) • Learned new methods of synthesis and characterization at both DTU and HTAS • Developed a high surface area oxide support for gold catalysts (DTU) • Both collaborations are leading to publications (DTU-in review, HTAS-in process) • Attended the CAMD Summer School Left and Top Right: Images of the gold particles support on KTiO2 rods. Right: Image of the NIFLHEIM cluster used at the CAMD summer school.
