  2. Police Brutality • Cases of police brutality can be seen worldwide • The latest case involving an African American was the Sean Bell shooting on November 25, 2006.

  3. Sean Bell • Sean bell was holding his bachelor party at Club Kalua in the Jamaica section of Queens. • The club was being investigated by seven undercover police detectives due to speculation that the owners of the club had been fostering prostitution. • The officers feared there would be a shooting after allegedly hearing Bell’s friend (Guzman) ask for his gun.

Sean Bell cont. • Bell then went into his car and when asked by the police to get out accelerated his vehicle. • The officer thought he saw Guzman reach for a gun while in the car, yelled "gun" to other police at the scene, and opened fire on the car. The seven officers began firing and poured 50 shots into Bell and his friends within a matter of seconds killing Bell and injuring his two others in the car.

AbnerLouima • In 1997, 30-year-old AbnerLouima was married, had one child, and had been living in Brooklyn for six years. • On August 9, 1997, Louima visited Club Rendez-Vous; he and several other men interceded in a fight between two women. • There was a confrontation between the police, patrons and bystanders involved in the scuffle outside the club.

AbnerLouima • The arresting officers beat Louima with their fists, nightsticks, and hand-held police radios on the ride to the station. • On arriving at the station house, he was strip-searched and put in a holding cell. • The beating continued later, culminating with Louima being sexually assaulted in a bathroom at the 70th Precinct station house in Brooklyn.

AbnerLouima • Volpe kicked Louima in the testicles, then, while Louima's hands were cuffed behind his back, he first grabbed onto and squeezed his testicles and then sodomized him with a plunger. • This resulting severe internal damage to his colon and bladder that required several operations to repair.

Rodney King • Rodney King is an African American is who best known for his police brutality case involving the LAPD on March 3,1991. • A man by the name of George Holliday videotaped much of the incident from a distance. • The footage showed officers striking King with their batons while other officers stood by watching, no one took any action to stop the beating.

  9. Rodney King • A portion of the footage was aired on national TV and raised tensions between the black community and the LAPD due to the amount of police brutality and social injustices in the area. • The Rodney king beating led to several riots in the Los Angeles area and shocked the world.

  11. Police brutality is just one of the many social injustices that we deal with everyday. • The only way we can stop any type of injustice is to make everyone aware of the problems going on and find productive ways to solve these issues.
