What is absolutism? • Absolute monarch- a ruler that controls all aspects of society • Philip II – Spain • Louis XIV – France • Maria Theresa - HRE • Frederick the Great – Prussia • Ivan the Terrible – Russia • Peter the Great – Russia • Divine right of kings – a ruler is ordained by God to rule

Philip II in Spain • Son of Charles V of HRE • Took over Portugal after the death of his uncle, King of Portugal • Gained Territory in Africa, India, and the Pacific • Took between 20-25% of all gold and silver coming from New World • “It’s good to be the king” • Spanish wealth allowed for a standing army of 50,000
