BICsEUROPEAN COMMUNITY BUSINESS & INNOVATION CENTERS http://www.ebn.be Business and Innovation Centers BICsare support organizations for innovative small and medium – sized businesses (SMEs) and entrepreneurs. Operating in the public interest, they are set up by the principal economic operators in an area or region, in order to offer a range of integrated guidance and support services for projects carried out by innovative SMEs, thereby contributing to regional and local development.

  3. E.C.BICs • E.C BICshave been a pilot project of the European Commission 16th General Administration Board. • The first BIC was founded in Brussels on 1983. • 150 BICs operate today in 20 European Countries and 60 Associate Members in Europe and beyond.

  6. E.C.BICs • A big network has been created in Europe and is called Ε.Β.Ν. (European Bics Network) which aims to support each BIC as well as the cooperation among them. • As part of the same policy, BICs cooperate with other SMEs support networks such as the IRCs (Innovation Relay Centers) and EICs (Euro Info Centers) • 4 BICs operate in Greece: Athens – Epirus – PatrasandLarisa

  8. Region of Epirus • Epirus is sited at the North Western part of Greece. Its borders are to the West with the Ionian Sea while to the East with Thessaly and Macedonia. It’s Northern borders are those to Albania and to the South spreads to Amvrakikos gulf and Aitoloakarnania Region.

  9. Region of Epirus Epirus is comprised by four Prefectures, these are: • Prefecture of Ioannina • Prefecture of Arta • Prefecture of Preveza and • Prefecture of Thesprotia The Capital of the Region is the city of Ioannina.

Region of Epirus • Epirus total land area is 9.203 km³ covering 6.7% of the country’s area. • It’s geomorphology is characterized by the mountainous terrain and the plentitude of water resources. This results to a rich natural environment, with plenty of forests, unique flora and fauna and rare natural beauty.

  11. Region of Epirus Economy • A percentage by 4.5% of the Greek rural production occurs in Epirus, an amount of 13% regarding the Greek manufacture and 2.6% for the Greek service sector. Epirus GDP Per Capita reach the amount of 9.977 € which occurs to 84% average for Greece. As far as the EU patterns concern, this is translated to 67% of the EU average. Due to these data, Epirus is placed among the poorest EU regions, together with Western Greece, Peloponnesus, Portuguese Azores, Spanish Extremadure and overseas areas of France.

  12. Region of Epirus Employment • Epirus unemployment rates are reduced to 3 units (10.6% of the workforce). According to Eurostat, the workforce of Epirus is expected to increase up to 8.6% during 2000 – 2010.

  13. BIC of Epirus • BIC of Epirus was founded in October 1996. 50 % of the first 18 months funds derived from EC, while 50% more by Local Sponsorship. • Foundation Purpose: «Non profit character for promoting the services of a Development Center of Innovative Enterprises»

  14. BIC of Epirus The Centre’s actions are focused on: • Awareness and information spread to existed enterprises • Cooperation among bodies • Support of entrepreneurship through EU and National Programs and Initiatives.

BIC of Epirus Targets • The development and support of Innovative SMEs in the region of Epirus through: • Research and promotion of innovative business plans. • Counseling and technical assistance to selected business plans. • Development of business skills of human resources. • Constant support of innovative enterprises. • Research for new markets and potential cooperation in national and international level.
