  2. Intro For Mother’s Day let us look at mothers in light of how they responded to God’s word and their influence on their families! (Prov. 1:8) (Prov. 6:20) There are many lessons that we can learn from mothers – lessons that help us define love and sacrifice, and examples that serve as warning of what not to do! We will consider the examples of mothers in light of the Good, the Bad, and the Godly! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  3. The Good – Physical Well-being • Sarah – Gen. 21:1-5 • God kept His promise to Sarah and she bore a son, Isaac. • Gen. 21:6-7: She was thrilled and praised God for giving her laughter. Gen. 21:8-10 8. The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9. Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. 10. Therefore she said to Abraham, "Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac." She was looking out for his physical well-being! • God condoned it and told Abraham to do as she said – Gen. 21:11-14 • She and Isaac were very close, for Isaac grieved her death till being comforted by Rebekah his wife, and he took his mother’s tent as his own – Gen. 24:67 She was a loving, protective mother to Isaac! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  4. The Good – Physical Well-being • Bathsheba – I Kings 1:15-21 • On the counsel of Nathan the prophet (1:11-14) Bathsheba went to David and asked about his promise to make Solomon king in light of Adonijah’s claims. I Kings 1:20-21 20. "As for you now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21. "Otherwise it will come about, as soon as my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered offenders." She was concerned for his physical well-being! • I Kings 1:28-31: David assured Bathsheba that day Solomon would be king (just as he promised and God promised David – I Chr. 22:9-10). • I Chr. 29:25: God “highly exalted Solomon” more than any other king over Israel! She was a loving, protective mother to Solomon! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  5. The Good – Physical Well-being • Mother of James and John – Mt. 20:20-23 • She asked for her two sons to sit on the right and left of Jesus in His kingdom. • She didn’t understand the nature of “the kingdom” and thought it was physical! Mt. 20:20-23 20. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. 21. And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left." 22. But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able." 23. He said to them, "My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father." She was looking out for her sons’ physical well-being! She was a loving, protective mother to her sons! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  6. The Good – Physical Well-being Sarah Bathsheba Mother of James and John (Wife of Zebedee) To love and want to protect your children is a good trait for a mother to possess! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  7. The Bad – Ungodly Influences • Rebekah – Gen. 24:67 • When she felt her twins struggling within her she did inquire of God by prayer (Gen. 25:22-24) • But she demonstrated two unfavorable characteristics (Isaac too): • Favoritism – Gen. 25:28: Isaac favored Esau, Rebekah favored Jacob. Gen. 25:28 28. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. • Deceit – Gen. 27:6-17: She taught trickery and deceit to her son Jacob in order to deceive her husband Isaac into giving the blessing to him. Gen. 27:10 10. "Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death." She stands as a mother who taught her son to deceive and lie to gain what he wanted in life! Mothers: The Good, The Bad, And The Godly

  8. The Bad – Ungodly Influences • Jezebel – I Kings 21:25 • I Kings 16:30-31: King Ahab of Israel married Jezebel and became an idolater! I Kings 21:25 25. Surely there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife incited him. • I Kings 18:3-4: Hunted down and killed the prophets of God. • I Kings 19:1-2: Threatened the life of Elijah! • I Kings 21:5-15: Orchestrated the death of Naboth • Her ungodly influence over her family caused their deaths: • I Kings 22:51-53: Ahaziah her son (II Kings 1:16-17). • II Kings 9:22-24, 27: Joramtheir son & Ahaziah their grandson • II Chr. 22:3-5: Athaliah, like her mother, was a an evil influence on her son (Ahaziah) “to his destruction” (II Chr. 22:7). • II Kings 10:1-11: Ahab’s remaining 70 sons killed. 9. The Bad – Ungodly Influences • Herodias – Lk. 3:19-20 • Herod took his brother Philip’s wife Herodias (Mt. 14:3-4) and when John the Baptist rebuked him for it he arrested John. • Herodias hated John the Baptist and wanted revenge – Mark 6:19 • She allowed (if not encouraged) her daughter to dance seductively for her uncle (Herod, Herodias’ 2nd husband) and her dancing “pleased him” – Mark 6:21-23 • When Herod offered to give her anything she desired, she asked her mother who counseled her to ask for John the Baptist’s head on a platter. Mark 6:24 24. And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." She stands as a mother who condoned immoral sensuality and murder!
