Introduction • A social network service focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, e.g., who share interests and/or activities. Most social network services are web based and provide means for users to interact over the internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging.
Introduction • Since their introduction, social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Cyworld, and Bebo have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily practices.

What Is Social Networking? We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to • Construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system • Articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection • View and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.
History According to the definition above, the first recognizable social network site launched in 1997. SixDegrees.com allowed users to create profiles, list their Friends and, beginning in 1998, surf the Friends lists. Each of these features existed in some form before SixDegrees, of course but SixDegrees was the first to combine all these features.
History New social networking methods were developed by the end of the 1990s, and many sites began to develop more advanced features for users to find and manage friends. This newer generation of social networking sites began to flourish with the emergence of Friendsterin 2002, and soon became part of the Internet mainstream.
History • Friendster was followed by MySpace and LinkedIn a year later, and finally, Bebo. Attesting to the rapid increase in social networking sites' popularity, by 2005, MySpace was reportedly getting more page views than Google. Facebook, launched in 2004, has since become the largest social networking site in the world.
