  1. Warm Up: Even though these sentences essentially say the same thing, they do it differently. 2. Agenda: SSR, Denotation and Connotation lesson HW: • Read for 30 min. • April Reading Log • Practice memorizing poem • Work on paper revisions Learning Target: Today I will be able to define denotation and connotation and order words with similar denotative meaning on a scale from negative to positive. April 26, 2012

  3. Denotation: The literal, dictionary definition of a word. Connotation: The emotional association we have attached to a word. Denotation and Connotation

  4. We associate feeling and emotion with all words, but some words are more “highly charged” than others. I can say I’m upset, but I can also say I’m annoyed, angered, irate, peeved, infuriated, steaming…. The word I choose lets others know how I feel about the situation, and it also gives them an idea of how to react to my words. Denotation and Connotation

  5. Let’s look at the following pairs of words. Think about what is their denotation (literal meaning), and then decide which word has a more positive connotation. Thrifty------------penny-pinching Content--------------------elated Chef-------------------------cook Clean freak-------------------tidy Connotation

  6. In small groups, I will give you a list of words that share the same general denotation but have a range of connotations. Rank these words from negative to positive, 1 being the most negative and 5 being the most positive. As a group, write a sentence in which you can use these words interchangeably. Explain how the meaning of the sentence shifts when you use a different word. Ex: My former roommate was so thrifty that she never paid full price for anything. -OR- My former roommate was so cheap that she never paid full price for anything. Activity

  7. Write a sentence that explains how connotation can affect the meaning of a sentence Exit Slip
