Annulment- A legal procedure for declaring that a voidable marriage is null and void. • Voidable marriage results from a problem that existed from the beginning of the supposed union. • Refusal to have children • Fraudulent grounds for marriage • Lying about wealth, pregnancy, freedom of disease, willingness to have a child, past marriage, age, etc.

  3. Void Marriage- Creates no rights or duties for either party and is considered invalid from the beginning. • Bigamist- Someone who knowingly marries a second spouse while still married to the first. • Divorce- The method usually used to end a marriage. • Dissolution- The term that many states use for the termination of marriage.

  4. No-fault divorce- The requesting spouse doesn’t have a grievance such as infidelity, desertion, cruelty, etc. • In most no-fault states, Irreconcilable differences are states as the legal reason for dissolution. • Separation- Spouses maintain separate living quarters, but their marital rights and obligations remain intact.

  5. Child Custody • Child custody- concerned with the division of the physical and other care and control responsibilities for a child. • The welfare of the child is the single most important consideration.

  6. Child Custody Factors • Parent’s wishes as to custody • Child’s wishes as to custody • Child’s relationship with parents, siblings, and others who may affect the child’s best interest. • Child’s adjustment to home, school, and community • Physical and mental health of all persons concerned.

  7. Child Support- The monetary payment by a parents to provide a dependent child with appropriate economic maintenance. • Pays for needs and wants of a child. • Alimony- Support paid by the wage earner of the family to the other spouse.
