Grade 6 – Health • USC 6.1 Analyze the factors that influence the development of personal standards and identity, and determine the impact on health decision making including mass media. • USC 6.5 Analyze the influences mass media on perceptions of and personal standards related to body image, and the resulting impact on the identities and the well-being of self, family, and community.

  6. Questionnaire – T or F? Fact 1: • Over 70% of girls avoid certain activities because they feel bad about their looks. • 20% won’t give an opinion • 15% won’t go to the doctor • 25% won’t go to a social event, party or club • 16% won’t go to school

  7. Questionnaire – T or F? Fact 2: • The above principle (fact 1) is not the same for boys. Boys don’t suffer from any image-related issues.

  8. Questionnaire – T or F? Fact 3: • Anxiety about appearance can put life on a limitless pause button. Today there is more pressure than ever on young girls and boys to be physically perfect.

  17. Reflection • What would we do differently? • If we could do the unit framework differently we would be more specific that body image is a male issue too. • It is easy to pretend that body image is only a girl issue because the resources are so abundant for how to help them.

  18. Message • Body image is more than just a female issue and teacher should make more of an effort to address both sides.
