  2. COORDINATE GEOMETRY • DEFINITION • The position of any object lying in a plane can be represented with the help of two perpendicular line . • In case of seating plan we require the no of column and that of the row, this simple idea has far reaching consequences , and has given rise to a very important branch of mathematics known as COORDINATE GEOMETRY.

  3. COORDINATE AXES • To locate the position of an object or a point in a plane, we require two perpendicular lines. One of them is horizontal, and the other is vertical. • The plane is called the Cartesian , OR COORDINATE PLANE and the lines are called the coordinate axis. • The horizontal line is called the X-axis, and the vertical line is called the Y-axis.

  4. PARTS OF COORDINATE GEOMETRY • The coordinate axis divide the plane into four parts called quadrants. • The point of intersection of the axis is called the origin. • The distance of the point from the y-axis is called its x- coordinate, or abscissa. • The distance of the point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate , or ordinate. • If the abscissa of a point is x and the ordinate is y then (x, y) are called the coordinate of the point.

  5. Rules of coordinate geometry • The coordinate of a point on the x-axis are of the form (x, o) and that of the point on the y-axis are (o, y). • The coordinate of the origin are (o, o). • If x is not equal to y then (x, y) is not equal to (y, x), and (x, y) is equal to (y, x) ,if x is equal to y.

  6. PLOTTIG THE POINT • The coordinate of point are of the form(+, +) in the first quadrant. • In the second quadrant coordinates are of the form (-, +). • (-, -) are the coordinates in the third quadrant. • In the fourth quadrant (+, -) is the coordinate of the point here + denotes a positive real no and – denotes a negative real no.
