Buffy and Her Elixir: The Scythe In Season 7 of the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy, a heroine chosen by mystical forces to vanquish vampires, demons and other nasty fiends, finds herself up against the ultimate villain, “The First,” who is the creator of all evil since the beginning of time. In order to defeat The First, she must solve a series of tasks to find her ultimate weapon, the Scythe, a mystical axe designed for the Slayer alone to wield. It is with this Scythe, her archetypal “elixir,” along with her allies, that she ultimately defeats The First and all of its agents. Buffy uses the scythe to vanquish “The First’s” primary agent, Caleb, the evil, misogynistic preacher. Buffy pulls the scythe out of a stone, an allusion to the legend of King Arthur and his sword Excalibur, yet another “elixir.” Buffy discusses the mystical powers of the scythe and how to wield it with the scythe’s guardian, the Wise Woman or High Priestess, another female archetypal character. p.s.
