The Ancient Use of Numbers: Exploring the Hindu/Arabic Numeral System

This presentation delves into the historical significance of the Hindu/Arabic numeral system and how ancient civilizations utilized numbers. It highlights the innovative introduction of zero by Indian mathematicians in the early 5th century, its transmission to Europe through Arabic scholars, and the subsequent expansion of mathematical concepts. Additionally, we explore the life and contributions of Fibonacci, an influential Italian mathematician, and the advancements made possible through this revolutionary number system. Discover how these ancient practices laid the groundwork for modern mathematics.

  1. How did the ancients use numbers? I am going to make a presentation about how the ancients used to use their Arabic/Hindu numeral system.

  2. Historical facts In the Hindu/Arabic numeral system they had specific codes for different numbers for example 10 would be coded for an arch.

  3. Fibonacci Fibonacci was a very clever Italian mathematician in the early of the 5th century as he was also known as the “Leonardo of Pisa” for his great work.

  4. Introduction of zero to Europe Zero was made by Indian mathematicians in the early 5th century and spread by the Arabians to Europe.

  5. Expansion of math's As zero spread in to math we invented new numbers such as 10, 100 and 1,000 thanks to zero

  6. Adding Since the new number system was invented we could add, subtract and divide numbers.

  7. How did the ancients use numbers? This is my presentation on how the ancients use numbers. I think that if we still used the Hindu/Arabic number system it would be very complicated. By: Muhammad Ali Bheda
