  1. DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES IN ALGEBRA COUNTY K-4

  2. GCF is first! FACTORING POLYNOMIALS We’ll look into this one today. Are there any squared terms left over? 2 Terms It is possibly the difference of two squares (DOTS) If a = 1, do guess and check. If a is a number other than 1, do guess/check or factor by grouping (product/sum). 3 Terms 4 Terms Factor by grouping.

  3. Remember the Typical Trinomials? What are a, b, and c ?

  4. These are called Difference of Two Squares What are a, b, and c ?

  5. Whenever b = 0, a and c are perfect squares, and c is negative, we have DOTS (Difference of Two Squares)

  6. Let’s try factoring this by the guess and check method.

  7. Let’s try factoring this by the guess and check method.

  8. Let’s try factoring this by the guess and check method. Do we see a pattern in this?

  9. Factor: Give the answer all at once!

  10. Factor: Give the answer all at once!

  11. Again, what is this called? Difference of two squares

  12. Difference of two squares:

  13. What’s the middle term?

  14. The answer to DOTS looks like this! ( )( )

  15. Factor this

  16. SUM of two squares

  17. CANNOT BE FACTORED It’s “prime”

  18. Why not this? IT DOESN’T WORK! Multiply it out.

  19. Can only be factored using the GCF

  20. Steps: • Factor out the GCF • Look for DOTS & factor it, or say it’s “prime”. 1) 2) 3)

  21. Steps: • Factor out the GCF • Look for DOTS & factor it, or say it’s “prime”. 4) 2) prime 5) 6)

  22. Row Game 7) 8) 9) prime 10)

  23. THE END
