  3. FADES Plan • Agreements with industry in writing • Involve industry • Involve municipalities • Provincial emergency program very valuable in strategic thinking, planning, coordination…

  4. Role of the Provincial Laboratory • Laboratory knows and understands their industry – level of trust with producers • CFIA must understand role and capabilities of provincial diagnostic laboratories e.g. if DL has molecular diagnostics capability, primers should be available for likely FAD • Establish common testing protocols in advance of outbreak • Role for CAHLN?

  5. Mortality Disposal • Role must be clarified for municipal gov’ts re landfills, municipal incinerators • Important role for Ministry of Environment • Private companies responsible for composting or moving mortalities: • Aware of disease issues? • Knowledge of controlling disease spread? • Are activities monitored?

  6. Communications • Share information within and between agencies; with the public and producers • Define role for public health if a zoonotic disease • Tele-seminar for industry associations worked well • News conferences valuable • Daily situation reports and media clippings • Hot line for perceived biosecurity infractions to allow for corrections • Phone line for producer suggestions may be helpful

  7. Local Expertise • Veterinarians – private and public have much to offer • Producer associations provide expertise on production information

  8. Animal Welfare • SPCA veterinarians • Must provide adequate training for depopulation crews i.e. ensure aware of types of production and sensitive to impacts on producer and his/her birds

  9. Industry Role • Industry needs a planning group to respond to disease or other emergency situations • Currently developing a local “Disease Response Plan” for poultry diseases

  10. Biosecurity • Document status before outbreak • Identify all shortcomings including commodity-specific risk activities • Industry must actively participate in additional biosecurity measures to prevent recurrence • Enforcement?
