  2. If you don’t have a SSN Temporary Visitor Drivers License

  3. Who is eligible? • Non-citizens of the U.S. • Those who have been granted temporary, legal entry into this country • Temporarily residing in the State of Illinois • Ineligible for a Social Security number • Be authorized to be in the country for at least one year and have at least six months remaining on an authorized stay

  4. Available Classes of License • D, L, M, DL or DM for the operation of a personal car, motorcycle, or motor driven cycle

  5. Required Documents Identification Documentation • name • date of birth • Illinois residency • verification of written signature Examples: Utility bill Lease/Dorm agreement Postmarked US mail

  6. Required Documents • SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 (Original & a Copy) • I-94 (Original & a Copy) • Valid Passport (Original & a Copy) • Rejection Letter from the Social Security Administration received within 30 days prior to the application of TVDL

  7. Validity of TVDL • Valid for three years • Or for the period of time the individual is authorized to stay in this country, whichever ends sooner. • Renewable – not before 90 days of current license expiration date

  8. Required Tests • Vision Test • Written Test (valid for a year) • Written driver’s license exam available in Spanish, Polish, Korean, and Chinese at Chicago area metro sites • Road Test

  9. Instruction Permit • To practice driving before taking a road test • Rockford Central Facility or other service facilities

  10. Fees • $20.00 - anyone between 16 and 18 years old • $10.00 - all others • Three tests - for the payment of the fee • Subject to change w/o notice

  11. If you DO have a SSN.

  12. Drivers License with an SSN • Bring your Social Security Card, passport, I-94 print out, I-20 or DS-2019, and proof of your local address (piece of mail). • You will be required to take a vision and written test. • You will be required to take a driving test if: • You do not have a driver’s license from your home country • Your home country drives on the left side of the road. • You must take the test in your own vehicle.

  16. Can we drive with a valid foreign driver’s license? • Yes but NOT Recommended • International driver’s permit with English translation of the valid home country DL • Difficult to get an automobile insurance
