  2. Working with the "Shifts" What Parents Can Do to Help their Children Learn The Common Core State Standards ask teachers to make six shifts in Mathematics. These changes may be tough at first as students and teachers adjust to higher expectations. As a parent, you can help and learn more by talking with your child about what they are learning. Ask open-ended questions about what they learned in school each day, read their homework and attend school events to learn about what their teachers expect. www.engageny.org Mathematics  Build skills across grade levels  Learn more about less  Use math facts easily  Think fast AND solve problems  Really know it, really do it  Use math in the real world

  3. The Old vs the New Students used to memorize math steps in order to solve problems. This was done by a series of steps to do a problem. Teachers are expected to focus more deeply on topics and cover less topics. “MORE IS SOMETIMES LESS” Students are more involved with the learning- sharing ideas, solving problems together, developing strategies. They will learn to select concepts and ideas that can be use to solve real-world problems for higher level success!!

  4. What a day of math looks like • Fluency • Application Problem • Concept Development • Debrief • Exit ticket
