  2. Expressions you simplify • Equations you solve for the variable’s value PROPERTIES?

Variable: A symbol, usually a letter, which is used to represent one or more numbers. • Numerical expression: An expression consisting of numbers and operations. • Algebraic expression: An expression consisting of at least one variable and also consist of numbers and operations. • Equation: A mathematical sentence formed by setting two expressions equal. • Inequality: A mathematical sentence formed by placing inequality symbol between two expressions.

  4. TODAY we will look at these closer. • Term: A number, a variable, or a product and a number and variable. • Coefficient: The number part of a term that includes a variable. For example, 3 is the coefficient of the term 3x.

  5. Like Terms & substitution to check • Have the same variables, but they do not need to have the same coefficient. Ex: 3x and 2x are like terms. Ex: 4x + 10x + 5 + 7 You can combine 4x +10x and 5 + 7 Ex: Find the sum of -2x + 3x Ex: 7y-2y • Rewrite using distributive property

  6. A restaurant sells sandwiches for d dollars. To keep up with rising costs, the owner will increase the price of each sandwich by 10%. Write an expression to represent the new cost of a sandwich. Then simplify it.

  7. Justify • Justify why the sum of 3a and 2b cannot be represented as 5ab.
