California’s Assessment Program NCLB Required Assessments
Types of Data – State Level STAR • Uses the California Standards Test (CST) • Once a year • Summative • Based on standards for that grade or subject • Accumulated knowledge for primarily short time, one point in time
Types of Data – State Level STAR • Given to students from grades 2 through 11 • ELA, Math, Science, History • Administered after 85% of instructional days • Alternate assessments are available for 1st year Spanish speakers and Special Education students

Types of Data – State Level CAHSEE • Administered to high school students starting in the 10th grade. • Must pass both math and ELA to obtain a diploma • Can retake the test in 11th and 12th grade if they do not pass in 10th • Some exemptions currently for Special Education students but not for non-English speakers
Types of Data – State Level CAHSEE • Scores • Pass/Fail • Scale Scores • Range from 275 to 450 • Need 350 to Pass for diploma • Need 380 to be considered proficient for Federal Government • Only 10th grade students are counted for proficiency
Types of Data – State Level CAHSEE • Based on set of criterion that is culmination of work over time • ELA – 9th and 10th grade standards • Math – 6th, 7th, & 8th grade standards • Taken until certain score is achieved or parting from school • Looking for accumulated knowledge for longer time, up to now

Types of Data – State Level CELDT • All non-fluent English speakers take this test when entering a California school • The scores are used to identify students who should be placed in an English Learner program. • Measuring English language proficiency • Expectation is that students will improve on assessment and eventually be exited from and English Learner program

AYP Under California’s criteria for NCLB, schools and LEAs are required to meet or exceed requirements within each of the following four areas in order to make AYP annually: Requirement 1: Participation Rate Requirement 2: Percent Proficient—Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) Requirement 3: API as an Additional Indicator Requirement 4: Graduation Rate If a school or an LEA misses one or more requirement, it does not make AYP and may be identified for PI.
