  2. What Drinks Are High in Sugar? • Soda • Lemonade • Sweet Tea • Sports drinks • Fruit drinks • Any beverage sweetened with sugar or sugar substitutes

  3. How Many Soft Drinks Do You Drink Each Day?

  4. Sugar Facts: • On average, Americans consume half a pound of sugar each day. • Half a pound = 48 teaspoons • 2- 20 ounce sodas = 34 teaspoons

  5. What difference do two cans of regular soda make per day? 2 cans aday for one year = 109,500 calories! 109,500 calories = 31 extra pounds a year!

  6. How Much Sugar Can I Have Each Day? • Sugar is found in many of the foods and beverages we eat and drink. • Not all sugar is bad!! • Foods and drinks with ADDED sugar should be limited. • A safe level has not been established.

  7. Is It Bad To Have Soda Every Day? • Depends on: • How much energy you need • Other foods you eat • Soda provides energy but does not provide: • Vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, healthy fat • Soda can replace healthy foods/drinks • Soda does not fill you up! • What do you think?

  8. Is it Okay to Drink Chocolate Milk? • Yes, it is! • Has some added sugar, but contains: • Protein • Vitamin A • Vitamin D • Calcium • Potassium • Other vitamins and minerals

  9. Is Juice Good for Me? • Juice has natural sugar, vitamins, and minerals. • Look for “100% fruit juice” • Avoid “fruit drinks” • Doesn’t always fill you up • Eat fruits instead!

  10. Are Gatorade/PowerAde Good Sports Drinks? • Our muscles use sugar (carbohydrates) for energy. • Important to replace carbohydrates, water, and minerals for extended periods. • Helpful for activities longer than 90 minutes • If less then 90 minutes, drink water and have healthy snacks.

  11. So How Much Sugar Do You Eat? Take a look at the label to see how many grams of sugar are in the foods and beverages you consume. 4 grams of sugar = 1 teaspoon

  12. Conclusion Reducing sugar helps you: • Stay at a healthy weight • Prevent chronic disease (like diabetes and heart disease) • Make sure you fill up on healthy foods • Prevent tooth decay
