  5. Management Process • The management process is the ongoing planning, organizing, and controlling of all sorts of activities that personnel throughout the organization are engaged in, including marketing, finance, production and operations, human resources, and so forth. • The word process suggests that these activities are continuous and never-ending.

  6. Management Process (Cont’d) • The management process begins with planning—the setting of goals (longer-term) and objectives (shorter-term) to strive for at each of the three primary organizational levels of the firm (corporate, divisional/strategic, and operating/functional) and with the development of activities to achieve them.

  7. Organizing • Organizing is the grouping of activities and the marshaling of the necessary resources (material, human, financial and informational) in order to achieve specific goals and objectives. • After the planning process has established what the firm intends to do, organizing answers the questions of how it will be done, by whom, and with which resources.

  8. Controlling • Controlling involves the monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting of activities to assure the successful achievement of the targeted goals.

  17. Motivation • Motivation in a business environment refers to the drive that individuals feel to perform their assigned tasks. • Research suggests that employees are more likely to be motivated in the work they do when the firm has clearly defined goals and realistic objectives for them to strive for.

  19. Theories of Motivation • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs • Equity Theory • Expectancy Theory

  20. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

  21. Theories of Motivation • Equity theory suggests that people are motivated by their personal sense of equity in a situation. This means that if an individual perceives that he or she is well treated and rewarded, then that individual will complement this belief with an appropriate level of motivation and effort to perform his or her work.

  22. Theories of Motivation • Expectancy theory suggests that motivation is associated with how much an individual wants to achieve the objective presented and the degree to which she or he believes it can be achieved. • The message of expectancy theory is that management must be sure to make the accomplishment of the assigned tasks both important to the individual employees and achievable in their minds. Weaknesses in either one of these factors will undermine the individual’s level of motivation to complete the set tasks successfully.
