In the pursuit of sustainable development the building and construction sector, the built environment, is of such vital innate importance that most other industrial areas of the world society simply fade in comparison. The International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction, CIB, took early a pro-active initiative and established Sustainable Construction as a priority theme. Where are we today, fifteen years after the Rio Summit, in the building and construction community? The presentation will identify the generic challenges and driving forces for development in building construction, give an overview of present R&D focus areas the field and of relevant standardisation, and conclude with a discussion on priorities of R&D and of market implementation challenges.
