  1. Let’s Get Cooking! Following RACES to the Quote Sandwich

  2. Why do I need to use quotes? • In order to really prove your point, you need direct evidence. • A lawyer wouldn’t walk into a court room and summarize what all of the evidence in his/her case would be. They take the evidence out and show it directly to the jury. Then, using his/her own words, the lawyer explains how the evidence supports his/her opinion. • Just like the lawyer, a writer needs word-for-word support from the text. Your evidence is exactly what the author wrote.

  3. How do you use quotes an essay?Easy! RACE your way to a quote sandwich. Bread on top Introduce quote (RA) Meat Quote (C) in the middle Bread on Explain (ES) bottom

  4. Step 1: Decide your opinion. What kind of sandwich will you be making? Question: Describe a characteristic Brian from Hatchet demonstrates that shows he is a survivor. Hmmmm. . . . Starving Wants the turtle eggs but doesn’t eat them all Self-Disciplined!

  5. Step 2: Find your meat (evidence). Only use what you need. Trim the unnecessary fat from the quote. “store them in the shelter and eat only one a day” (Paulson 102)

  6. Step 3: Recycle the question and Answer with your opinion. Question: Describe a characteristic Brian from Hatchet demonstrates that shows he is a survivor. Top Piece of Bread: One trait that Brian from Hatchet possesses that shows he is a survivors is that he is self-disciplined. No open-faced sandwiches here!

  7. Step 4: Cite your evidence. Question: Describe a characteristic Brian from Hatchet demonstrates that shows he is a survivor. Hmmmm. . . . What does my reader need to know in order to understand my quote? Give your quote a little context so it makes sense and then put in your quote. Toppings and Meat: Even when he has barely eaten for days, Brian rations the food he finds. For example, when he finds the turtle eggs, at first he a ate six eggs right away. He stopped himself, though, and decided to “store them in the shelter and eat only one a day” (Paulsen 102).

  8. Step 5: Explain how your evidence proves your opinion. Add your own spices to that delicious meat! When in doubt use this sentence starter to help you: This quote shows . . . because . . . This quote shows that Brian is extremely self-disciplined because he is able to control himself even though he is so hungry. After days of eating only berries he does not immediately eat all of the eggs. Instead, he makes a plan to save them and eat them gradually in case he isn’t rescued right away.

  9. Step 6: Summarize your ideas. Tie everything up and really prove your point. If you don’t want your sandwich to fall apart, you need . . . Bottom Piece of Bread: It definitely took self-discipline from Brian to ration his food and survive in the wilderness.
