  1. Social Media Certificate UpdateSeptember 2015

  2. Current program profile • 4th semester • 1st cohort of about 20 graduated in May • Currently, 150+ students • Several colleges across campus are represented by certificate students, although most are still from Scripps • Recruiting push will bring more students in from across the university

  3. Is your schedule up to date? • Contact Karen (riggsk) if you have questions about how/when to schedule the right courses for you to ensure that you graduate on time with the certificate. • Best ways to meet Karen: • Monday/Wednesday 1-3pm office hours • Advising week: sign up for a time on office door, Schoonover 322 • Contact Mira Kuhar (mk221811) for certificate information and ideas anytime!

  4. Required: These fill quickly—register ASAP! • MDIA 2113: Intro to Social Media (Fall); must take before MDIA 4120 • MDIA 4120: Advanced Social Media (Summer 1 and Spring); try for online Summer I after Junior year, also offered Spring for Seniors only). By permission, so ask early. • COMS 3200: Communication & New Technologies (Fall and Spring); try starting as early as Junior. There is a wait list if you don’t get in. If you are a graduating senior, contact the instructor immediately after being unable to register.

  5. About your electives • Electives are just that—your choice. You choose 3. • Pencil in your choices early in your program so you can plan accordingly. The sample electives on these slides are just starting points. Choose what you think will best meet your needs (in consultation with me). • For example, if you plan a career in PR in politics, you could combine the 2 StratComm classes with next Fall’s MDIA Special Topics seminar in Social Media & Politics. • Following are ideas for just a few majors.

  9. What about deleted classes? Even if a class is no longer offered, if you took it for credit toward the Social Media Certificate, it counts!

Preparing for your job search • The next few slides give you a sense of jobs that are out there & where to find them. • Look for internships, too! • Use networking skills and contacts through Social Connect Society to develop internship possibilities. Benefit from your peers’ experience. • Get to know your school and college internship coordinators!
