  1. THEME: STRENGTHNING THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN DELIVERINGSUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS • SUBJECT:SOLAR QUIPMENT/WINDMILSS TECHNOLOGIES • PRESENTED BY: HAMISI S. MIKATE, ENSOL (T) LIMITED

  2. CONTENTS • INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR ENERGY AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • GLOBAL STATUS OF SOLAR AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • SOLAR ENERGY EQUIPMENT • WIND EQUIPMENT • ENSOL PROFILE

  3. 1. INTRODUCTION OF SOLAR ENERGY AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) • Solar PV relates to generation of electricity using sunlight when sun rays hit devices called solar cell. When solar cells are connected together it is called solar module • The main components for Solar PV systems are Solar module for capturing sunlight and converting into electricity, Solar charge controllers for controlling and managing electricity to and from the battery, Solar batteries for storing electricity generated by solar module for uses when there is no sun and Solar Inverters for converting dc electricity from the battery or solar module into ac electricity (the same as grid electricity) • The are off-grid solar systems both stand –alone and hybrid (mainly in developing countries. • There are also, On-grid systems (mainly in developed countries), where solar electricity is fed into public main grid. • Lastly there are pico-solar products, this refers to solar lanterns and small lighting products (these are low budget packages)

  4. INTRODUCTION OF SOLAR ENERGY AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • SOLAR THERMAL (WATER HEATING) • Solar water heating is the science of heating the water using the sun. • There are two types of solar water heating systems based on how they operate: One is Non-Pressurized and Pressurized • Non-Pressurized is the system in which the water flows by gravity to solar water heater tank • Pressurized is the one in which the water flowing to the solar water tank may use pressure pump

  5. INTRODUCTION OF SOLAR ENERGY AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • SOLAR CONCENTRATED POWER (CSP) • Concentrated Solar power is the concentration of sun ultra violet rays to very high temperature such that it can heat water or air. The heated water or air is then heated to vapour and subjected into very high pressure so that it can run steam engines for electricity generation.

  6. INTRODUCTION OF SOLAR ENERGY AND WIND TECHNOLOGIES • WIND TECHNOLOGIES • Wind technology relates to the use of wind to turn the turbine for the purpose of electricity generation or water pumping. • There are small wind turbines used for generation of electricity in small scale (1kW to 50kW) • Large Wind turbines are used to generate huge amount of electricity in MW.

  7. 2. SOLAR ENERGY GLOBAL GROWTH STATUS • SOLAR PV GROWTH • SOLAR THERMAL GLOBAL GROWTH

  8. 3. SOLAR ENERGY EQUIPMENT I. SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) • SOLAR MODULE/ PANEL – This is the heart of any solar PV system whether is small or big. • SOLAR BATTERY – This is for storing electricity during the night or cloudy days. It is not used for On-grid systems and solar water pumping systems • SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER – This is used to controller the amount of electricity into and out of the battery so that it isn’t damaged. • SOLAR PV INVERTER – It used to convert electricity directly from solar panels and feed into the grid. • SOLAR BATTERY INVERTER – It is used to convert dc electricity from the battery into ac electricity

  9. 3. SOLAR ENERGY EQUIPMENT II. SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS • IT HAS TWO MAIN PARTS (COLLECTORS AND WATER TANK) • COLLECTORS – This where the technology is. These are special copper pipes and vacuum tubes which are good heat absorbers; they absorb heat for heating the water to between 40 to 70celcius degrees. • WATER TANKS – This is a special tank designed to store hot water after being heated. It has also a special portion where cold water is received from the inlet pipe before being heated.
