  2. Adoptive Family • One that accepts the legal responsibility of raising a child or children of other biological origins

  3. Blended Family • Sometimes called a recombined, reconstituted, or step family. • A family re-formed through marriage. • May include either stepfamily members or half siblings.

  4. Breadwinner • This type of family has one parent who makes the majority of the income while the other parent stays at home to care for the children.

  5. Childless Couple • Sometimes called “child-free”. A couple who shares a household without children.

  6. Dual Income Family • When both parents are working to support the family.

  7. Extended Family • When family members such as aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. assist in caring for children.

  8. Lone-Parent Family • Also known as single parent family, this is when there is one parent with his/her children.

  9. Foster Family • A family that offers temporary care for children until they can return to their family, or be placed into an adoptive family.

  10. Nuclear Family • Two parents and their child or children. This is the broadest term and can include dual income or breadwinner.

  11. Your Task • In groups of 2-3 brainstorm a media example of each type of family form and configuration. Your example must be different from the ones provided in this PowerPoint and can come from TV, Movies, Books, or Celebrities. • In your group, determine 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage for each family form
